You are selling into the UK from abroad, and…
- Amazon has told you a UK VAT number is needed before your stock can go into UK fulfilment centres?
- You have been told there is no VAT threshold for an overseas seller, and want to know if that is true?
- You are not sure who accounts for the VAT when Amazon collects it from your customer?
- You will be importer of record for your own goods and nobody has explained postponed VAT to you?
- You want a UK accountant who answers, not a platform with a ticket queue?
Then let us take it off your desk. Every one of those is a question we answered for the last overseas seller who wrote to us, and they were signed up within two days.
What we do
Your UK VAT, start to finish
Registration, done right first time
We register your company with HMRC as a non-established taxable person, link your GB EORI, and set up access to your postponed import VAT statements. One application, no rejections for missing paperwork.
Every return filed
Quarterly UK VAT returns prepared and filed through Making Tax Digital software, with Amazon's deemed-supplier sales, your own direct sales and your imports each treated correctly.
Postponed import VAT reconciled
Monthly PVA statements downloaded before HMRC removes them, reconciled to your shipments, and reflected in the return so you never pay import VAT twice.
Amazon reporting made sense of
Amazon's VAT transaction reports turned into figures that go on a return, with the zero-rated deemed supply to Amazon and any B2B sales separated out.
HMRC correspondence handled
Letters, queries and compliance checks answered by us, in plain English to you. You are copied in; you are not left to deal with it.
Advice as you grow
Moving to direct UK website sales, adding wholesale customers or a second marketplace: we tell you what changes for VAT before it happens, not after.

Reviews
What clients say
“We were looking for accountants near Gerrards Cross for our limited company and found Growth Ledger. They handle our year-end accounts, Corporation Tax and VAT for a fixed monthly fee, so we always know what we're paying. Priyan flags tax savings during the year rather than telling us afterwards, which no previous accountant ever did. Straightforward, responsive and worth every penny.”

“We are a small business, and moved to Growth Ledger after outgrowing our previous accountants. Priyan and his team at Growth Ledger reviewed our tax position properly and found planning opportunities that had been sitting there unused, which saved us a meaningful amount of tax. He and the team is proactive rather than reactive, explains things without the jargon, and is genuinely easy to deal with. Recommended if you want an accountant who thinks ahead instead of just filing.”

“Growth Ledger does my monthly bookkeeping and is helping us wind down my company - Priyan worked out the most tax-efficient way to take money out before we did anything. The handover from our previous accountant was much smoother than expected.”

Questions
Questions overseas sellers ask us first
We are not based in the UK. Do we really have to register for VAT?
If your company has no UK establishment and holds stock in the UK, or sells goods that are in the UK at the point of sale, yes. The £90,000 registration threshold only applies to UK-established businesses. For an overseas seller it is nil: you must be registered before the first sale from UK stock, and Amazon will not accept overseas-seller stock into UK fulfilment centres without a UK VAT number.
Amazon collects the VAT from our customers. Why do we still need to file returns?
Since 2021 Amazon is the deemed supplier for most consumer sales of UK-held goods by overseas sellers, so it accounts for the VAT on those. But you still make a zero-rated supply to Amazon that goes on your return, you still reclaim import VAT, and any sales to VAT-registered UK businesses or through your own website are yours to account for. The returns are usually simple, but they are still due.
What is postponed VAT accounting and do we need it?
Postponed VAT accounting lets you declare and reclaim import VAT on the same return instead of paying it at the border and waiting for a refund. It needs a GB EORI linked to your VAT registration. HMRC publishes a monthly statement of what was postponed, and removes each statement after six months, so we download and reconcile them every month.
Do you need to be appointed as our VAT agent or VAT representative?
Neither. Your registration and returns run through your company's own HMRC online account and Making Tax Digital software, which we operate for you. We do not act as a VAT representative for any client, because a representative becomes jointly liable for your VAT, and we think that arrangement serves nobody well.
Who is the importer of record, and do we need a customs agent?
Usually your company is the importer of record for its own stock. A business with no UK establishment normally needs an indirect customs representative to make its declarations, and many freight forwarders will not take that role. We flag this early because it is the practical hurdle that delays first shipments far more often than the VAT does.
How long does registration take, and when should we start?
HMRC typically takes four to eight weeks for an overseas-seller application, sometimes longer if they raise questions. Start as soon as you have a shipping date in mind. If stock has to move before the number arrives, import VAT is paid at the border on that first shipment and reclaimed on your first return.
What does it cost?
Registration is a one-off £395, which includes linking your EORI, setting up postponed VAT statements and dealing with HMRC's questions. Ongoing returns, Amazon reporting and PVA reconciliation are from £99 a month, all-inclusive, and the monthly fee only starts from the month your registration takes effect. You pay nothing monthly while HMRC process the application.
